Standard 4 Teachers know how to teach. The teacher understands and uses a variety of instructional strategies, including the use of technology, to encourage children's development of critical thinking, problem solving, and performance skills.
Evidence 1: PowerPoint Vocab
Rationale 1: This lesson was created during my Action Research. The lesson was created for a Spanish 3 class, but can easily be adapted to be used with any level for any unit. The goal of the lesson is for the students to present the new or learned vocabulary words. Each student is given a vocabulary word and must create two slides for the class PowerPoint presentation. The first slide must be a digital photograph representing the word and the second slide is a duplicate, but with the word in Spanish included on the slide. Students are divided into groups and each group receives a digital camera. They have 10 minutes to take all the photos. They will then create their slides and save them in the class folder.
The students loved the fast pace of this lesson and that they were able to use cameras and computers. Because we did everything in one class period, they had to think creatively and quickly to take a picture to represent their word. In the lab, students stayed on task and were able to do whatever they were able to within PowerPoint in the given time. Students with more knowledge of the program created effects on their slides and other students just created two basic slides. When we viewed the entire class’ slides, students were able to self-evaluate their work as it compared to other students’ work. The focus of the lesson was on the students being responsible for the vocabulary rather than just reading it from a list.
What I enjoyed about this lesson was how easy it was for me to use the technology within our building. I had 3 different digital cameras that were in the hands of the students. I uploaded the images for the students to all access them. We went to the computer lab and the students were able to easily retrieve their images and save their PowerPoint file on the school’s server. I then imported all of the files into a new PowerPoint document and projected it for the entire class to see.
KSD 4.K.3 The teacher knows how to enhance learning through the use of a wide variety of materials and technological resources (e.g. computers, audio-visual technologies, videotapes and discs, local experts, primary documents and artifacts, texts, reference books, literature, and other print resources). This lesson required the students to use a digital camera and a computer. The finished product was viewed with the entire class on the multimedia projector. The students read the slides and were responsible for writing down the vocabulary. 4.S.2 The teacher uses multiple teaching and learning strategies to engage students in active
learning opportunities that promote the development of critical thinking, problem solving, and performance capabilities and that help students assume responsibility for identifying and using learning resources. Students were engaged with the lesson because of the variety of tools used and because of the pace of the lesson. 4.D.1 The teacher values the development of students’ critical thinking, independent problem solving, and
performance capabilities. Students needed to think of a way to represent the vocabulary word and follow through with all steps to present the word. Each student was responsible for coming up with their own idea and for creating a PowerPoint slide that enhanced their idea.
